Design Gansta: Just my M-A-C and Me. Word.

A little Friday fun for all you design geeks out there. Our homie Cari Clark (MC Awesome Opossum) of Clark Creative passed this along to me this morning. Ripe with design jargon, Apple keyboard short-cuts, and good ole’ font references, this had me chuckling…especially toward the end.

Next to the Miss Teen South Carolina debacle (”such as”) earlier in the week (and her second chance), this might be my favorite YouTube video of the week.

“My rulers are long and my type is strong.” Word.

National Geographic says Redheads set for extinction

National Geographic

So, uh…I know this is sorta off the topic, but in the interest of self-preservation (and a picture of Nicole Kidman, Elizabeth Kucinich), Angel and I thought this was interesting. Plus, we’re a little foggy after a great cSpot (creative folks networking event) yesterday and we thought a little light reading procrastination may be in order.

No more redheads? (Elizabeth Kucinich)
Elizabeth Kucinich

Apparently, my brother and I are an endangered species. And Carrot Top. No joke.

According to the article, National Geographic says:

Genetic scientists warn that redheads are a dying breed; soon they will become extinct in the next 100 years. National Geographic magazine reports that less than two per cent of the world’s population has the natural red hair.

Whoa. I feel a bumper sticker coming.

SCAD = Cutting Edge & Entrepreneurial

“Cutting edge” and “entrepreneurial” are two words we love to hear around here, and SCAD was listed as both in the Kaplan College Guide and Fortune Magazine this past week. Holla! Woot Woot!

Since I don’t have the Kaplan book, I’m quoting the Savannah Business Report & Journal:

The Savannah College of Art and Design has been named one of “25 cutting-edge schools with an eye toward the future” in Kaplan’s 2008 “You Are Here: A Guide to Over 380 Colleges & Unlimited Paths to Your Future.” In 2006, SCAD was named “Hottest for Studying Art” among America’s 25 Hottest Colleges by Kaplan/Newsweek.

In the words of Borat, ‘a very niiice.’ Personally I like the “Hottest for Studying Art” award; that could be taken quite literally.

Fortune Magazine lists SCAD under ‘Best Colleges for Entrepreneurs’ in the Double Major category, stating:

Students at this artistic enclave can learn about commercial product development through the school’s Working Class Studio course. Undergraduate seniors and graduate students conduct market research, study supply and demand, and work with design and product development professionals to develop, and often manufacture, product lines. The students’ creations are sold at the college and through SCAD corporate partners, such as Barnes and Noble.

Savannah Sidewalks

Twin City SidewalksThe Minneapolis-based blog twin city sidewalks wrote a post focusing not just on Savannah’s sidewalks but also our legacy of economic development. The author highlights his positive and negative aspects of our community while discussing the “three phases of Savannah: the historical, and modernist, and what ever you call the present.” I pulled out some of these highlights for discussion.

“The Historical”
“Savannah is one of the most interesting, well-preserved cities in the country…buildings sit around a unique town plan that scatters little public squares at the center of every other intersection. There’s nothing like this anywhere in the world, as far as I know, and Savannah’s squares are fantastic examples of walkable public space. On top of the squares, there is the rich history of Savannah itself.”

I can’t argue with that, downtown Savannah is beautiful. The squares, the river and the architecture stand as a tribute to the region’s history. Well, maybe the river isn’t quite a tribute to the history but I had to throw that in because I love our downtown waterfront.

“The Modernist”

Broughton Street - Charm or Chain (or both?)

With the recent arrival of chain stores downtown, it makes one (and the SMN) think - is Broughton Street morphing from charm to chain? An article in the Savannah Morning News highlights the merging of these two retail types.

1927030361.jpg

When tourists board a trolley in Savannah to drink in the sights, they ask to be taken to the Historic District’s well-known byways: “Take me to Broughton Street, take me to River Street,” they say. When they re-board after a few hours, their shopping bags mark where they’ve been. Some of the bags sport national brand names such as Banana Republic and Marc by Marc Jacobs, but still others bear the logos of local shops such as BleuBelle Boutique and Copper Penny Shooz.

Now Broughton is no stranger to nationwide restaurants and retail shops, we have a Panera, Starbucks, Quizno’s, Subway, Lenny’s (I ‘heart’ the Chicken Philly Salad!) AND a Blimpie located within blocks from each other. Combine those with The Gap, Banana Republic and Marc Jacobs and you have a wide selection of main stream shopping.

iPhone unlocked: AT&T loses iPhone exclusivity

Whoa.

As a shameless Apple fanboy, I couldn’t resist this “little” tidbit of info. From Engadget:

It’s high noon, Apple and AT&T — we really hate to break it to you, but the jig is up. Last night the impossible was made possible: right in front of our very eyes we witnessed a full SIM unlock of our iPhone with a small piece of software. It’s all over, guys.

What the heck does that mean? It basically means you will soon be able to use an iPhone with a non-AT&T network. Let the madness ensue. Now if only I can find a spare $600 lying around.

Drivin’ Mr. Mayor: All the way to Sweden (and back)

It’s not every day you get have the Mayor of Savannah in your (appropriately washed) car, but today was one of those days. (Although in all fairness, we decided to make Brynn drive while I did my best to brief the Mayor. My navigational skills are…lacking.  Any rate, we needed to be on time.)

What’s the occasion? Today StageFront Presentation Systems helped us host the first ever Sweden-Savannah video-conference to further the dialogue between Savannah and Sweden…in this case, the city of Växjö (pronounced “Veck-shuh” for those of you who are curious) in particular.

(If you can’t see the video directly below, you can view it here.)

A little back-story

This past February Miller and Johan Gustafson, a Swedish entrepreneur, began a collaboration to assist companies who wish to grow their business and gain access to their respective markets in Sweden and Savannah. This collaboration grew into a partnership that now includes continued conversations with more than 25 businesses and 65 people in both Savannah & Sweden. The initial dialogue resulted in several visits by Johan to Savannah - during the most recent of which he brought two other leading Swedish businessmen along for the ride. To say the least, it was a productive trip.
