Numbers and Web stuff. That’s some good nerdy goodness.

Two of my favorite things:

Numbers and Web Design/Development.

They’ve both been combined in A List Apart’s new Web Design survey. They asked around 33 thousand web nerds 37 questions a piece…and then went and got all statistical on their arses - providing “the first data ever collected on the business of web design and development as practiced in the U.S. and worldwide.”

A List Apart

To my delight, they even provide the raw data so you can go crunch on your own.

Sweet.

Anyway, If that kind of thing floats your boat, please take a look.

SNAP it up people…at the American Legion

Just a reminder, for those of you that don’t know, have forgotten, or whose spam filters ate up the invite.

Tomorrow (Wednesday the 24th) is a fun shindig. At the American Legion.

SNAP

All of you know about the Savannah Music Festival (SMF) and hopefully most of you know about SNAP (their young peeps group that I’m involved with.)

With the SMF approaching quickly, they are ready to unveil their 2008 season announcement and they’ve decided to double-time it and combine the event with SNAP’s monthly party. FUN.

Festival Supporters and current SNAP members (and folks who sign up for a SNAP membership at the door) will be admitted at 6pm for cocktails and fun announcement shenanigans.

So if you ain’t a SNAP member, sign up at the door. It’s worth it, and all the cool kids are doing it. Plus you’ll get free admission to the event and a free cocktail to boot!

(Folks who don’t want to be SNAP members will be able to buy tickets for first and second set at 7:15pm at the door for $10.)

Pizza and Alligators: Ideas Influencing New Internet Companies?

Tuesday was Leadership Savannah day, and the topic of the month was: “Media/Information/Technology.”

Oh goodie. :)

Collage

Despite the fact that I knew the presenters and had actually heard their presentations before, I was still excited. I’m a sucker for nerdery and any chance to revel in it is fine with me. The program revolved around 3 sessions:

  • Where Savannah is today in terms of technology and access to information
  • The future: How Information will move and why community leaders should care (panel discussion)
  • Facilitated dialogue

The people speaking were the usual cast of characters you’d might see at any TCCi event: Jason Burr of ATDC, Bradley Taylor of RailsMachine, Murray Wilson of tps, Jim Goodlett of Morris Technology, and Dan Suwyn of Rapid Change. All great folks.

I’m not going to go into too much detail, but suffice it to say I enjoyed myself - although, admittedly the program was a little long and we all got a little sleepy toward the end. I think feeding people tasty Barnes food followed by 5 hours of sit down discussion will tend to do that.

The Orange Step (in Savannah!)

Have you seen some interesting activity around Forsyth Park in the past couple of days? Well, the word on the street (actually I got the tip from my roommate, Kelly, and the full scoop from this super article by Jim Morekis at ConnectSavannah.com) is that there is an art piece being installed on nearly 2500 square yards of the downtown green titled, “The Orange Step.”

The Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF) is sponsoring the public display of art, created by painter Kiril Jeliazkov, a SCAD graduate. Originally from Bulgaria, Kiril has been working with HSF to exhibit his series of 128 twenty-foot-tall abstract paintings in Forsyth Park.

The project, should everything go smoothly, will be completed by noon today (Oct. 18) and will be on display to the public (for FREE) through Tuesday, October 23 October 30th.

My favorite job-post-of-the-week (Energetic Pizza Eating Web Surfer?)

So I’m sitting here with my eyes crossed from looking at spreadsheets, and while looking for a reprieve from the numbers, happen to glance at my inbox and see one of our timely TCCi Job Alerts sitting right at the top.

The title reads: “Energetic Pizza Eating Web Surfer

I mean damn, I already have a job and I’m interested.

Help Wanted

Call me crazy, but I feel like if you sound fun and different, and you’re upfront about the job tasks involved…you’re more likely to get responses. Makes sense.

Who needs industry buzz-words and euphemisms? “We’re seeking a self-starter to implement a cocoa-bean transporting solution and sanitation action plan. Strong communication skills and proficiency with operational PBX systems a plus.”

Dude, just say you need someone to bring you coffee, take out the trash and answer phones. Everybody knows that if you’re creative, bright and/or ambitious, you won’t be the low man/woman on the totem pole for long.

This is what I’m talking about:

Musings of Oddpodz

Our timely buddies over at Paragon beat us to the punch.

This past Tuesday we threw a big warm welcome shindig for one of the newest creative businesses in town, Oddpodz. With a packed house at Cha Bella we all did the Savannah wine and schmooze thing (albeit in a little-hotter-than-necessary weather) and formally welcomed Karen and Joceyln to Savannah.

At any rate, instead of raining on Paragon’s parade I’m going to link to it (and steal one of their snazzy pictures.)

Go take a looksie

Dude, the Mayor has a Mac (and a blog)

So I’ve been hiding out all day (away from the office) trying to finish our annual economic report and was sorta in one of those snarky I-want-to-be-done moods until I saw this.

And it totally made my day.

Microsoft might as well pack it’s bags and go home. Because, well…even our trusty mayor (or at least someone in his office) has a Mac.

I know this because he’s got a new blog. And there’s a picture of him. With his Mac. (And the caption, “Otis Johnson, blogger.”)

Did I mention I love Savannah?

Otis Johnson

The critical subtext of course is that local politicians are jumping into the blogosphere. Clint Murphy’s got one too. As long as they fill it with regular content (there is nothing more lame than a stagnant blog for “blogs” sake), I personally think it’s fantastic.

(Unofficially) Go Mr. Mayor! (Unofficially) Go Clint! Get your blog on!

P.S. If you know of any other politicians-turned-bloggers, let us know in the comments.

Nerd alert…lil’ web stat action. (Firefox and Macs love us)

This is a little dorky but it’s Friday and we’ve had a slow week post-wise so I thought I’d share.

So, I’m kinda excited. I was looking at our google analytics and we’ve officially got more people coming to our blog that use Firefox than Internet Explorer (IE). This is cool for a couple of reasons.

First of all, Firefox is the browser of choice for geeks and increasingly the main stream. Still, it commands less than 20% of the market worldwide (depending on who you ask.)

Browsers

Beyond the hip factor (in the geek world), Firefox is “kinder” to web developers and designers in that it adheres to web standards (basically the rules that everyone is supposed to follow). For most developers and designers, IE is, well…the devil. Stuff that “works” (i.e. displays correctly) in Firefox, doesn’t always do so in IE. (Microsoft has made some attempt to remedy some of these concerns with it’s new version of IE…7.0.)

You Should Drink Tuesday night. (It’s ok, it’s for the Earth.)

greendrinkssavannah.jpgHave you even been sitting alone in your room at night thinking, ‘If only I knew a place to go enjoy a tasty beverage and chat about the environmental issues that mean the most to me?” Of course, we’ve all been there!

Well now you can add a new social networking group to your list of happy hours; October has given ‘birth’ to GreenDrinks Savannah!

What is GreenDrinks Savannah?

“GreenDrinks Savannah is a social networking group initiated by local non-profits and businesses to engage community members in an informal setting. Savannahians love to socialize and they love to improve Savannah. GreenDrinks aims to provide an opportunity for both!”

Why should you go?

Because you love Savannah, of course, and care about ‘her’ sustainability. Plus, GreenDrinks Savannah was created as a local branch of the very hip international group GreenDrinks, whose mission is to act as a monthly, self-organizing network of individuals who love to chat about the environment and local ‘earthly’ issues. Basically, everyone else is doing it, so you should join too! Our local group’s instigators are Summer Teal Simpson, Sarah Gaines Barmeyer, Sara Barczak, Tommy Linstroth, John Van’T Slot, Patty McIntosh, Pete Krull, James Nolan and TCCi’s very own Chris Miller.
