Ooops…we can explain. The hacker made us do it.

As you may have noticed, we were down yesterday.  The pesky Mr. Hackerman was putting his lame nose where it didn’t belong (our database) and really mucked some things up. Luckily, there is such a thing as backups, changing passwords and other super-secret-we-can’t-tell-you-because-HE-is-listening measures.

In the process of restoring backups, we had to re-post a few things which means that you would have gotten old posts in your feed reader and email inbox. Sorry. The hacker made us do it.

Our main suspect (kinda looks like me in highschool?)
Hacker

At any rate, we’re back in action…for now.  But, in the meantime if you notice anything fishy it’s because we’re still dealing with this dude.  The I-don’t-have-anything-better-to-do-than-%@#-up-other-people’s-sites douchebag of the internet world.

Help a sista out…with some Hamburger Helper?

Anytime I get an email that starts with “can you help a sista out” and  ends with anything having to do with Hamburger Helper, you’ve got my attention.

While I don’t think I’ve ever actually had Hamburger Helper, I do (strangely) have fond memories of their commercials from childhood. Yea, not sure why either.

Hamburger Helper

At any rate, DaVena from A.W.O.L. emailed me and asked for a little assitance. A.W.O.L. applied to Hamburger Helper to get some funds for thier IT program and they need community members to post comments about our program on the Hamburger Helper site to support the effort.

A little about the program:

The AWOL Youth Tech Training Program will serve 45 at-risk young people. The goal of the project is to enable youth to enter the world of Information Technology and enhance abilities, employability and ultimately, self-sufficiency by providing them with computer skills training leading to industry standard certifications.

This project will impact our community by providing alternative education and employment avenues for at-risk youth living in a community with decades of entrenched poverty and a current high rate of juvenile crime.

Dear Mr. Hackerman: You suck.

So, it finally happened: We got hacked! (Or our blog did.)  Some loser managed to hack our Wordpress installation and keeps disabling comments on the IDSA post. Wierd thing is, it’s ONLY on that post.

I guess I should feel lucky…initially, he deleted the entire post and substituted a cornucopia of assorted pornography and prescription drug links. As if I didn’t have enough of those in my overflowing-with-nastyness inbox.

Hacker

At any rate, the reason I mention it is so that if you notice any sillyness on the blog, you know why. Rest assured our web monkeys (me) are diligently banging away at the problem, but if you have any suggestions, let us know.  (BTW, thanks Nick for the tip on 2.3.3…I upgraded the file that contained the vulnerability but unfortunately Mr. Hackerman is still at large.)

Anyhoo, just an FYI.

Reminder: The Coast, she is Creative. IDSA Comes to town…

One of the coolest things about my job is that I get to see all the crazy and interesting people who for one reason or another want to come visit Savannah.

One such group of crazy people, the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) decided to hold their board meeting here. If you’ve never heard of the IDSA, don’t worry…but listen. The IDSA IDEA Awards are like the Oscar’s of design. Ask any SCAD student worth his or her retro-80’s punk jeans…the IDEA awards are “it.”

The new president of the organization, Frank Tyneski is about as big a bad-ass as you can get in the design community. The dude has more than 50 domestic and foreign patents and was Director of Design Integration at Canada’s Research in Motion (RIM…you know, the makers of the beloved crackberry) and led the design efforts on the Blackberry 7100 series (the one with the small two-letter-per-button style keyboard…predecessor to the Pearl.) We got to hang with him for dinner recently, and he’s definitely a cool cat.

Yea, A.W.O.L. is the bomb. (And they “keep it TIGHT”)

Last week I had the pleasure of being the last person in this office to visit the A.W.O.L. offices downtown on Drayton Street. I know, lame…what took me so long? I have no idea, but I’m glad I finally stopped procrastinating and dropped off our “donation” of two (optionally functional) LaCie hardrives with Tony. As usual with these guys, my expectations were blown.

Never heard of AWOL? Well, either you’ve been living under a rock, or aren’t very cool. Sorry, but its true.

AWOL (All Walks of Life) is one of the coolest non-profits in town and has stirred themselves up a bevvy of followers, a killer program and a good deal of grant money in the last few years. Their mission is pretty simple: “to promote and provide self-awareness through the use of poetry, hip-hop and life.” Basically, they provide young people and at-risk youth with safe afternoon and night-time youth programs. Programs that, though spoken word (poetry) and hip-hop, encourage education, respect, creativity and most of all, nonviolence.
