Summer is almost over and that means one thing:  The third annual Geekend is almost upon us.

The Geekend crew and I have been hard at work over the past eight months incorporating feedback and lots of new ideas to ensure this year is even bigger and better than before.

One of the big changes is that we’re taking the show on the road this year. In addition to our main Savannah event in November, we’re also going to be in Boston delivering a mini-Geekend at the Direct Marketing Association’s annual event in October. The hope is that this global stage of 10,000+ attendees will put a spotlight on the Geekend conference, the Savannah area and all of the creative energy in the region.

The Creative Coast’s blogspot is Savannah’s sounding board for local thinkers, innovators, wanderers and wonderers. Guest bloggers share their thoughts, opinions and creative noodling from all over the map. This week’s guest blogger is Bradley Taylor, founder of Savannah-based RailsMachine, rabid technologist and all around livestock expert (work in progress).    Read on for some organic advice from the field….

Over the past few months, I’ve been building a farm in Sylvania, GA (follow cute photos of animals). Being a computer nerd, the experience has been exciting and challenging given the differences between farming and my “day job” at Rails Machine. Although the details of why I started a farm is beyond the scope of this guest post, my desire is to share a few insights picked up along the way. Adopting new careers that I’m unqualified for is a bit of a bad habit, but I consider the experience to be valuable business cross training.

For this post, I’m sharing my five favorite observations from building the farm. There are quite a few more, but these have the greatest application off the farm and in the “real” world. Although phrased as “advice”, these observations are based entirely on my experience and have been useful to date.

This week’s guest blogger, Celia Dunn, founder & owner of Celia Dunn Sotheby’s International Realty.  Celia’s business provides her with unique perspectives on our local community.  Read on to see what one of Savannah’s biggest fans is thinking today….

Downtown Savannah is enjoying another revitalization of sorts right now. Many people living in Savannah, as well as people from other cities, are choosing to move to the Landmark Historic District now that prices have come within reach. We’ve seen a mixture of ages, from younger families to people nearing retirement age who know this is where they want to live, and more have purchased primary homes rather than second homes.

Young families are finding it more affordable now to live downtown. I reared my children downtown and it’s a wonderful home for families. I love seeing more people pushing strollers and children playing at the Forsyth Park playground or splashing in the water at Ellis Square.
