Guest bloggers share their thoughts, opinions and creative noodling from all over the map. This week’s blog is from Ann Sheils,  poet, writer, world traveler and proponent of all things good for humankind.    Read on for Ann’s spotlight on one of her favorite happenings in Savannah in January…

Mtn Film 2013

It’s been a great week for Telluride Mountain film on Tour, Savannah because I’ve been stopped on the street and in the grocery store by friends and acquaintances asking me whether or not it’s that time again. And it’s wonderful how diverse their interest is—once people get over the enigma of the name—no these films are not a Telluride travelogue– they never fail to be amazed by the powerful stories.

These short documentary films, traveling not only to Savannah, but also around the world, educate us about places we’ll never go and adventures we’ll never have, and inspire us to face our world with the courage of the people portrayed in these films who persevere against the great odds of unruly Nature, or village hatred, or overwhelming disability.

The men and women, boys and girls in the documentaries carve their existence out of circumstance so dire that we leave the auditorium having experienced catharsis—being purged of all emotions except the sublime ones of endurance or triumph.

I can’t wait—less than two weeks until my world is enlarged again.
