This is a little dorky but it’s Friday and we’ve had a slow week post-wise so I thought I’d share.
So, I’m kinda excited. I was looking at our google analytics and we’ve officially got more people coming to our blog that use Firefox than Internet Explorer (IE). This is cool for a couple of reasons.
First of all, Firefox is the browser of choice for geeks and increasingly the main stream. Still, it commands less than 20% of the market worldwide (depending on who you ask.)

Beyond the hip factor (in the geek world), Firefox is “kinder” to web developers and designers in that it adheres to web standards (basically the rules that everyone is supposed to follow). For most developers and designers, IE is, well…the devil. Stuff that “works” (i.e. displays correctly) in Firefox, doesn’t always do so in IE. (Microsoft has made some attempt to remedy some of these concerns with it’s new version of IE…7.0.)
Additionally, we’re beefier in the Mac department than average. Mac’s usually make up less than 7% or so of the PC market worldwide (depending on who you ask.) More than 22% of our blog visitors on the other hand are using Macs. Yippie!

This isn’t really big news…most blogs and geeky-oriented sites have a higher-than-average makeup of Firefox and Mac users. Still, I thought it interesting that we fell into that category and especially that Firefox has officially trumped the evil Internet Explorer.
Still using Internet Explorer? Don’t worry, it’s not THAT big a deal (depending on how fervent of a convert you talk to). Still, IE is less safe and can be more susceptible to spyware and other internet nastiness. It also makes us web nerds lifes’ less easy because IE doesn’t always work and play well together with standard web practices.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed (or endured) your Friday dose of web nerdery.
P.S. If you’re looking to switch to Firefox, you can do so here:

I hadn’t realized the extent of your nerd potential until just now. Well done.
Oh that’s nuthin’. Wait ’til we come out with our annual econ report. (Hopefully by October 15th). There will be more numbers than you can shake a pocket protector at.
A little dorky? Yes, but you bet it matters.
Resist enslavement by any evil empire!
Open source is all-American.
Also, it speaks well of the readership of the blog that so many of your eyeballs are not coming from Microsoft sheep-people.
And another thing . . . I’ve always been favorably impressed and surprised with the number of Macs about town. It’s a good sign; seriously, it’s a positive economic indicator for several reasons.
Get yer Geek On, oh Dorky one!
Hmmmmm.
My Commodore 64 didn’t even move the needle. (Come to think of it, my leisure suit of the same vintage didn’t get me very far either.)
Ahh…fond memories as a 10 year old of my old-school Commodore 64 with the big ole’ floppy disks. Word.
I came across this blog maintained by an IE developer and it seems IE 7 Beta 2 will be a HUGE advance in the way it handles CSS and HTML, which is very good news for us developers.
However, now we have to cross our fingers and hope all the nasty IE 6 and 7 hacks we currently use won’t break sites when they release the new version of IE.
One thought comes to mind: Will fixing busted sites due to IE 7’s new release be a billable task? Hmm… I can see this being a huge debate in the near future…
Preach the good word, brother Haile! Firefox rox my sox off. You may find this interesting. Firefox is over 25% of the market, and Linux has just recently surpassed Windows 98! Times are good for open source.
underdude: Couldn’t that be considered an “act of god”? Actually, I think Mr. Gates has more money than the Creator, so I guess it’s even more out of your control. You can’t be held responsible for that, can you?
Kudos. Unfortunately, that means you’re either attracting only the right kind of folks to your site, or not attracting enough.
Can’t believe people still surf with Internet Exploder.
