As TCCa’s fresh new intern, Fitz wanted me to get my blogging feet wet by getting you up to speed on one of the coolest things to hit the streets of Savannah: SUAF.

Presented by our dear friends over at A.W.O.L. (All Walks of Life), and sponsored in part by a slew of progressive community partners, SUAF (a.k.a The Savannah Urban Arts Festival) is a six-day series of live performances, forums, workshops and film screenings celebrating the diverse styles of art, music, and writing that have developed in and around urban culture. The goal of the festival is to foster dialogue between area youth, citizens, and civic leaders about ways to utilize these art forms to create positive change in communities by engaging people, particularly youth, in activities that offer creative outlets, teach job and life skills, and create new entrepreneurial opportunities.

This year’s SUAF jumps off May 5th-10th, 2009 in Savannah alongside GreenFest on May 9th-10th. SUAF through its partnership with GreenLifeSpace aims to raise awareness about the importance of environmental sustainability in urban areas, including steps that individuals and organizations can take to reduce their impact on the environment. It’s not easy being Green!

SUAF is fulfilling its civic duty to nurture Savannah’s own home grown talent by showcasing local artists, film makers, dancers, and recording artists such as Brittany Bosco and Grammy nominated Savannah born Anthony David.  These actions to foster local talents are SUAF’s attempt to curb the trend of artists not being appreciated in their hometowns and having to pilgrimage to larger markets to “make it.” Alongside these artist will be featured special guests Bill Strickland, Jeff Chang, Dope Sandwich, Abeni Arts and many more.

SUAF is having an open call for submissions from artists in the region to take part in the festival. The festival is looking for musicians, poets, filmmakers and any other artist of an under-celebrated craft who are interested in showcasing their creativity. They will be accepting submissions through the end of April.

So get with the lingo, May 5th through 10th.  Check out SUAF!  You’re sure to have a SUAFtastic time attending the many SUAFalicious events SUAFing the SAV. Get SUAFY and Have a SUAFerific day!

P.S. Check out a director’s reel from one of the festival participants, Roni Nicole:

Tuba players? I used to play the saxophone (like a blind monkey.) I could whip that out and put you all to shame.
