Songs of Savannah??

I’ve blogged before with 12 Podcasts for the Creative Class and have asked you what music inspires your creativity, but now I can ask ‘What music makes you think Savannah?’

I found a blog the other day (ok, yesterday morning before work coughNERDcough) that features a list started with songs about Savannah. The blogger credits Savannah Underground’s thread where people are adding to this compilation. I may or may not want to go on to iTunes this weekend and create a ‘Creative Coast’ playlist.

  1. “West Savannah,” Outkast
  2. “Hard-hearted Hannah,” Ray Charles
  3. “Georgia,” Ludacris, Field Mob (mostly about Georgia as a whole)
  4. “Down by the River,” Camoflauge (I’d never heard of Camoflauge [r.i.p.] until I visited Savannah for the first time in July. I’m guessing most of his stuff is about the town.)
  5. “Savannah (Part One),” Band of Horses
  6. “Savannah,” Ted Weems
  7. “Sunday in Savannah: Martin Luther King Suite, Part 1,” Nina Simone
  8. “Stomp Down Rider,” Blind Willie McTell
  9. “Good Little Thing,” Blind Willie McTell
  10. “Got Three Women,” Blind Willie McTell
  11. “Savannah Mama,” Blind Willie McTell
  12. “Get Up Jake,” The Band
  13. “Delia,” Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, et. al.
  14. “So Long Savannah,” Eric Bachman
  15. “Moon River,” Johnny Mercer
  16. “Country Grammar,” Nelly
  17. “Moon over Georgia,” Shenandoah
  18. “The first Mrs. Jones,” Porter Wagoner
  19. “Song Man,” Tanya Tucke
  20. “Red Hot Mama,” Funkadelic
  21. “Jug Band Music,” Lovin’ Spoonful
  22. “Savannah Fare You Well,” Jimmy Buffet
  23. “Savannah Woman,” Tommy Bolin

Can you think of any other songs to add? Any other songs that just make you ‘feel’ Savannah? For me, anytime I hear Jimmy Buffet or The Greezy Joe Band (island music - they handed me their CD at a gas station in Statesboro about 3 years ago) I think of sitting at the North Beach Grille having some drinks and enjoying the sun.

  1. Two of my favorite “Savannah Songs” ever recorded and not on Underground’s List are: 1) Savannah Song by Jake Matson who lived in Savannah about 10 years ago and was one of the greatest retro bottle-neck blues players in the USA. He performed at my old Rhythm Del Mundo Shows ( I was the MC/Host for Open Mic NIte) at the original Gallery Espresso when it was on Liberty Street. It’s from the album, “Comin’ Home”. 2) Savannah in The Rain by Griff. This tune was a top beach music hit back in the 80’s done by a guy from Charleston who sang some of the grittiest and swingin’ beach music in the Low Country. I met him when I was a Sales MAnager for The Breeze Radio Network which played Beach, Boogie, & Blues. It’s a hard to find tune but it’s on one of Griff’s albums.

  2. Who is “Blind Willie McTell”? What a name…

  3. Phil - You should add those to the Underground Savannah thread. I’ll have to check those songs out online.

Fitz - Blind Willie, check out the Wiki entry:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_Willie_McTell

I first heard of him while in college in Statesboro, there is a bar (was?) named Blind Willie’s. A lot of blues bars are named after him. He sang the song Statesboro Blues which was covered by the Allman Brothers and others. He had a rich blues history in Georgia.

  4. thanks for the new song ideas. i’ll add them to my running list.

  5. India Arie’s “Little Things” always made me feel Savannah.

  6. If you want to just hear music that is shaping Savannah now you should check out the new podcast (for The South magazine) hosted by Patrick Rodgers (of Hangfire DJ fame and Vinnie Van Go-Go’s Pizza Throwing fame). You can find that podcast here. It is also available for iTunes subscription.

  7. Damn…that’s really cool. Had no idea you guys had that on your site. Podcasting it up as we speak…

  8. How about “Hard Hearted Hannah,” unless we’re afraid of the wrath of Ms. Smack Dab Studio?

    “They call her
    Hard-hearted Hannah
    The Vamp of Savannah
    The meanest gal in town
Leather is tough, but Hannah’s heart is tougher
She’s a gal who loves to see men suffer”

Covered most notably by Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerald.

    one more time:
    “She’s hard-hearted Hannah
    The Vamp of Savannah, GA
Can you imagine a woman as cold as Hannah?
She’s got the right name, the Vamp of Savannah
Anytime a woman can take a great big pan
Start pouring water on a drowning man
    She’s hard-hearted Hannah
    The Vamp of Savannah, GA

Ooh, she’s sweet as sour milk!”

  9. I have to say, i love the fact that I have my own “Theme Song” for Savannah - and my favorite rendition is the one the Billy Holiday sings…Hard Hearted Hannah indeed!

  10. FYI, it’s Savannah Underground, not Underground Savannah. I’m sure, what with their original thread being recreated here, they’d appreciate a correct name drop :)

  11. Thanks for the heads up Carrie…it’s been fixed. And thanks again to Underground Savannah…er, Savannah Underground.

  12. “Part One” by Band of Horses, a Charleston band on Sub Pop records. The line from the song…

    Drive Back through Carolina,
    And down to Savannah…and stay.

    Brilliant

  13. Hi! I am a musician here in Savannah. I played at the Olde Pink House for 14 years. My Savannah Moon CD came out in 1995. The song “Savannah Moon” (the first track) is known throughout the world, and people tell me it brings memories of Savannah to them. The words were written by my father-in-law, Jack Thurmond, over 60 years ago, and after moving to Savannah, I found his words and wrote the music, eventually recording. You can listen to an excerpt on my website. I play now at Grapevine Restaurant.

  14. Lamar

Actually I can add too, even though I know this is an old blog:

    Up all Night by Widespread
    Alabama by Cross Canadian Ragweed

There’s also an Ataris song about Savannah, but I can’t remember the name.

Of course “Moon River” too, the songwriter lived in Pin Point, and Moon River is the river you cross before Skidaway Island.
