Whoa…nice. That’s a headline!

I know we’ve been rather SLACK over here lately in the blogging department (our apologies), but I was combing through all my feeds this afternoon and found this beauty from Scott Larson:

Mess with an alderman, defecate, puke and get arrested.”

Wow. Good work man.

We’ve given you hell for your headlines before, so I thought I’d continue the tradition. Although, I must admit…this one made me sit up and read.

Bodily excretions: a tool every blogger should use.

And yes, you guys at CC ARE slack. Stop being amused by poems and blog for crotch’s sake.

As long as the headline gets you to read it…

Oh, the art of the headline. It’s such a fine balance between sensationalism and representativeness/accuracy. Don’t you think?

Anything with “defecate” in the title will definitely get a read from me.

In all seriousness, headlines are the hardest things to write. And when you get that 56-point type, if it’s even slightly off it becomes very wrong to the people involved.

I could write a jacked up story with five errors and people would only remember the headline.

I get this all the time: “Oh, the story was fine, but the headline was terrible.”

Occasionally I get the same line but with Tom Barton substituted for the word headline.

The alternate headline was just as good…

“Alternately titled: Tony Thomas shows up on a police report but does nothing wrong.”

Fitz, thank you. What would I have done had I missed the “defecate, puke” story? This just makes my Friday. I now have a bona fide “you won’t believe what was in the paper” story for tonight’s “over drinks” conversation.

I’m a tool. That was a grotesque marketing attempt on my part.
